Patrick Henry "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" March 23rd 1775

First I want to give some background information about Patrick Henry. Patrick Henry was an orator politician who led the movement for independence in Virginia in the 1770s. He lead the Stamp Act of 1765. He was a founding father. And after the Revolution he was the leader of the anit-federalists in Virginia.

1. What is the author arguing?

The author is arguing that the House of Rep. Is not supporting them by not giving them Liberty. The author wants to send troops to the Revolutionary War. And also give liberty to the people.

2. How does the author appeal to logos (logic), pathos (emotional quality), and ethos (the writer’s perceived character) with their argument?

The author wrote this sounding very patriotic and loyal or full of determination. His words were very convincing and straight to the point. He also had some imagery in his speech which made his speech sounded beautiful. He wrote in a smart, wise, and humble manner. He stated that Liberty is what they needed and he was determined to get Liberty as his famous quote states "Give me Liberty or Give me Death." He emphasizes how important it was to send troops to the Revolutionary War and how things could take affect if they didn't. He stated some things he didn't like such as the people having to petition for Liberty and freedom. He talks about how God will preside with them and will fight their battle for them if the House of Rep. will not take action.

3. What is the historical significance/relevance of this document?

The historical significance/relevance of this document is that Henry is determined to give Liberty and freedom to the people. He is trying to make a change that will change and help things. This shows how much he loves his country and people. Also this shows how far he would go to help the people.

4. Do you find the author’s argument convincing? Why or why not?

I actually found the authors argument very convincing. At first it was tough to understand with the difference of how he writes and how today's world writes it was just difficult to read and understand. How he expressed himself was very convincing and how he showed how much he loved his people and country made it more convincing. The way he wrote his speech was graceful and powerful. It felt like he gave some imagery in his speech so that when i read it i can visualize what it looked like. When i read it i felt like i was sitting there with all of the other house of representatives. It felt like he was talking to me. And if i were a house of representative back then and he said his speech to me. I would be totally convinced. I would approve everything he said in his speech.

The Seven Years' War, 1754-1763

Thomas Hutchinson became the royal governor of the colony of Massachusetts. Hutchinson worked hard to keep the british and colonists aligned. Unfortunately his plan of union failed and lead it to ensue the seven years war. Therefore, this made the british and colonists go against the french and their indian allies. After the war ended the british colonists tried to make the colonists pay for the damages. But, the colonists protested against the british tax policies such as the sugar act, the stamp act, the townshend duties and the tea act. Although the british tried to make the colonists pay for taxes, Hutchinson was still loyal to britain even though he knew it was wrong. Quickly, Hutchinson decided to resolve the british and colonial relations. After he resolved the situation he became the first american to recognize the hardships of maintaining full rights and privileges for colonists.
